What Is Zantac?

Zantac is a type of drug called a histamine-2 (H2) blocker. It works to reduce stomach acid, which can relieve symptoms of conditions like acid reflux and heartburn. Normal side effects of Zantac include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain.

Before its recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), multiple companies manufactured Zantac, including but not limited to the following:

  • Sanofi
  • Mylan
  • Sandoz Inc.
  • Novitium Pharma
  • American Health Packaging
  • Precision Dose Inc.

Why Was Zantac Recalled?

In April 2020, the FDA requested the removal of Zantac and its generic version ranitidine from the market. Researchers discovered that Zantac contained very high levels of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), much higher than is safe for human consumption.

NDMA is a potentially cancer-causing chemical. Its presence in Zantac increases as time passes and when the medication is stored at higher than room temperature. Many patients ingested Zantac with unsafe levels of NDMA and were subsequently diagnosed with cancer.

What Is Iowa’s Statute of Limitations for Zantac Claims?

In Iowa, a Zantac lawsuit needs to be filed within two years from the date of your cancer diagnosis. Otherwise, the court will dismiss your case and you won’t be able to recover compensation. While there are certain exceptions to the statute of limitations, they are not common. If you believe that you qualify for litigation, speak with an Iowa Zantac injury attorney at Estey & Bomberger, LLP.
